August Knight: The Artist Who Burns His Truth into Every Medium

Toronto’s August Knight is not just stretching his artistic wings—he’s soaring across genres, igniting everything he touches with raw emotion and a rebel’s heart. A singer-songwriter, author, publisher, and now a visual artist of searing intensity, Knight continues to evolve with a fearless devotion to personal truth and cultural reverence.

Once known on stage for his gravel-soul Americana sound, Knight built his legend in the clubs and dive bars of Canada, bleeding stories into microphones with "gospel ache in his chest" and “Americana dirt under his nails.” His music always felt lived-in—songs about love, loss, and redemption wrapped in a rebel’s whisper and a poet’s cry.

Knight’s storytelling didn’t end at the mic. Under the name Craig Knight, he authored A Journey on Gentle Wings, a deeply reflective narrative, and When the Horses Run Free, a collection of lyrics and stories that acts as a songbook for his creative soul. He’s also made waves as a publisher, founding Razor and later Strutter and Fit Parent, unapologetically giving voice to outsiders, rockers, and renegades.

Now, Knight brings that same pulse to the visual arts with Eternal Symbols and Toronto Rocks, two evocative portrait series that burn legacies into wood. These aren’t just portraits—they’re altars. Using laser engraving on birch and maple, Knight fuses folk iconography, street art chaos, and personal mythology to carve the essence of legends like Leonard Cohen, Janis Joplin, Gord Downie, Muhammad Ali, and many more.

"Eternal Symbols isn’t about nostalgia,” Knight says. “It’s about the weight of legacy, the ghosts we carry, and the icons we turn into gods.”

His self-portrait, part of the Toronto Rocks series, reveals a man who is both rebel and romantic—flames, roses, vinyl, and heartbreak etched into maple. “Knight sings like every moment matters,” reads the description, “for the dreamers, the drifters, and the ones who’ve loved and lost—he’s one of us.”

The Toronto Rocks collection celebrates the unsung heroes of the city’s music scene: artists like Danny Marks, Toney Springer, and Jennifer Foster—musicians who play for love, not fame. Each engraving is a living tribute to authenticity in a world of noise.

And that’s what ties all of Knight’s work together—authenticity. Whether it’s through a ballad, a book, a magazine, or a wood-burned portrait, August Knight isn’t here to entertain. He’s here to tell the truth, no matter how gritty, how poetic, or how loud.

Knight now lives by a cold Canadian lake, with sawdust on his boots and unfinished lyrics in his pocket. But make no mistake—the fire in his chest is still burning. Visit www.augustknight.ca
